Study Abroad Information for Castleton Faculty & Staff Developing a Castleton Trip
Developing and leading a trip off-campus may be the hardest, but most rewarding learning experience one can have with students. Whether students go on a semester-long or one-week trip with a faculty member, an Alternative Spring Break service trip, or a trip with a club or sports team, for many students, the experience will be the transformative experience of their time at Castleton. - Any trip is considered a Castleton University trip if:
- Castleton faculty, staff, and students are the persons planning, leading and promoting the program; or
- Castleton academic credit is awarded at the completion of the program.
- Faculty interested in developing a trip for academic course credit must first have their course reviewed and endorsed by the Castleton department in which they are offered.
- All Castleton trips must provide a travel safety plan
for review and approval by Castleton's Travel Safety Committee prior to any advertising, registration, fundraising, or major purchases for a trip.
- Trip leaders should develop
travel safety plans in initial consultation with the responsible administrator
(Director of the Robert T. Stafford Center for Support and Study of the
Community for community service trips; Associate Dean of Athletics and
Recreation for athletics team and club trips; Dean of Students for student club
trips; or Academic Dean for faculty-led trips).
- Budgets for travel courses need to be developed and
approved before the registration period for the term the program starts. The costs for the program (e.g., transportation, housing, meals, entrance fees, honorarium, supplies) are added to the course in the form of a ‘lab fee.' Please submit the
budgets to Jonathan Spiro who will consult with the Budget Office and
approve them.
- In all cases, the minimal expectation is that each
Castleton student be a student in good standing, both academically and
socially, as outlined by the Code of Conduct in the Student Handbook. If
they are not in good standing, or do not adhere to the Code of Conduct during the trip, they will not be permitted to participate.
- Each leader will be supplied with a P-card.
- If you add an international cellphone plan to your personal phone, you can be reimbursed for the expense.

Key Points for Advising Castleton Students about Study Abroad
- Study
abroad is NOT just for language or global studies majors!!!
Castleton's study abroad office works with programs that offer
opportunities all over the world for every academic major.
- Many
study abroad programs do NOT require that a student take courses in
another language. Thus, even students with no foreign language
skills/experience can study abroad in many locations across the globe.
- Study
abroad is NOT simply for the "rich kids". There is financial
assistance available to students with financial need, thus making study
abroad financially feasible for most students.
- Students
must get courses pre-approved at Castleton before going on a study
abroad program so that all courses taken abroad can be transferred back
to Castleton.
- Castleton
has a two-step application and approval process for full-semester study
abroad programs. First the student must choose an academically relevant
program and be approved to study abroad; then the student must apply to
the Program Sponsor and/or Host University.
- Finally, a student will need your guidance figuring out how a course will be equivalent, and will need help completing prior approval forms: CourseApprovalForm.pdf
